Senior Dental Care
While age is not the only determining factor in oral health, seniors often need specialized care. Over time, normal wear and tear, as well as personal habits and hygiene, take a toll on the teeth. In addition, seniors with systemic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease are twice as likely to develop gum disease - the number one cause of adult tooth loss. As a geriatric dentist, Dr. Solomon takes the time needed to comprehensively evaluate the condition of our elderly patients' teeth, gums, joints, and soft tissues.
In an initial senior dental care examination, Dr. Solomon will check for common problems that develop with age. These include:
- Stained teeth. Enamel and dentin gradually wear down over time, causing teeth to lose their luster. Other contributing factors include dark foods and beverages, tobacco, and medications.
- Dry mouth. Medications and prosthetics (dentures and partials) can intensify dry mouth which, in turn, promotes tooth decay.
- Gum disease. Caused by plaque, tobacco products, ill-fitting dental devices, and diseases such as cancer and diabetes, gum disease is a common problem for senior patients.
- Tooth loss. One in four people over the age of 65 have lost all of their teeth due to injury, decay, or disease.
Dr. Solomon will carefully evaluate all areas of concern, and then offer simple therapies that will restore oral health. He may suggest additional cleanings, periodontal therapy, restorative work, or replacement teeth.
