Periodontal Care

Are your gums tender, swollen, and red? Do they bleed when you brush or floss? If so, like millions of other Americans, you may have gum disease, the leading cause of tooth loss in the US. Gum disease is directly linked to increased risk for heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. The truth is, many people put off seeing a dentist due to fear or other concerns, but the risk to your health is too great to let anxiety stand between you and optimum oral health.

Caught in its early stages, called gingivitis, gum disease is easily treated and eliminated. When you visit us, our attentive and gentle hygienist will evaluate your gums for signs of disease or damage. In case your home flossing and brushing routine needs strengthening, she will instruct you on the proper techniques.

If you show signs of gum disease, you may need a deeper gum treatment that includes scaling (teeth cleaning beneath the gum line) and/or root planing (smoothing the roots to eliminate areas susceptible to plaque buildup). Sometimes, if infection is present, patients need Arestin, a topical antibiotic applied directly to affected areas. Learn more about gum disease and its treatment in our patient library.

Cosmetic dentist and general dentist Dr. Gary Solomon has helped patients optimize the health of their gums and teeth for 20 years. He understands that anxiety often prevents patients from seeking the gum treatment they need, so he provides measures like laughing gas and conscious oral sedation to keep patients completely comfortable during procedures. You can read about oral sedation in our patient library.
